Drug Treatment – It’s Not What You Think (It’s Better)

Great Expectations
Before entering a treatment program you’ll have plenty of ideas and preconceived notions of what it’s going to be like. It’s natural to be nervous and perhaps even put off about the idea of going to drug rehab. Many people, especially addicts and alcoholics, tend to think in terms of worst case scenario when considering the unknown. Sometimes these ideas come from something a friend has shared with them about their less-than-desirable experience in treatment, or that of someone they knew. Other times the impression they get is from a movie or a show they saw on TV where drug rehab is portrayed as a dark and cold environment where a cheap cup of coffee is the only thing to look forward to. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Keep an Open Mind
First and foremost, remember this: It’s nothing like you think. The treatment experience is different for everyone, and like so many things in life you get out what you put in. One thing is certain though, it’s better than the daily struggle of addiction. Addiction recovery treatment is designed to be a safe place where life gets better and the sun begins to shine brighter. Stay open to the idea that you might just like it. It might just be one of the greatest experiences of your life-it might just save your life.
With the help of family and close friends, discuss some different treatment options. An outpatient program may be the best route to go if you’re not in a position to leave your job or if you need to be around to meet family obligations. In considering the different options, be mindful of the need to make haste. Time is of the essence so don’t let the choice deter you from getting into a drug treatment program as soon as possible. The sooner the better. Trust and believe that you are making the right decision to get help. You are on the path to recovery and getting your life back on track where you’ll be able to be clean, sober and free.
